Those converted include seven men and 11 women who adopted Islam during a colourful ceremony organized by local Muslims and conducted on Tuesday evening by Mian Ghaus Mohammad, the custodian of the Khwaja Ghulam Fareed shrine at Jhok Farid.
A large number of local Muslims attended the function. They were cheering and shouting slogans of Allah Akbar. The family was welcomed into the Islamic fold by the members of the Muslim community.
The family was made to recite the Kalima Tayabba, as a mark of acceptance of the Islamic faith. All of them were given new Muslim names. Samaram, the head of the family, chose Mohammad Sharif as his new name. Prominent people of the area were present on the occasion.
Notwithstanding the fact that none of the family members complained of any force in converting to the Islamic faith, but the occasion itself betrayed the desperation and helplessness of the people who had lived under a different faith all their life and had to adopt a new faith.
It is not for the first time that members of the minority community were converted to Islam. Earlier such an affair used to be low key. With lot of radical influence among the Muslim community the minorities are left hardly with any option but to convert.
There have been several reports of forcible conversion of members of the minority Hindu community in the southern Sindh province. Community leaders have also alleged that several women were abducted and forced into marriage with Muslim youths.
Members of the Hindu community, especially traders and professionals like doctors and lawyers have been the target of kidnapping for ransom and extortion demands in the restive southwestern Balochistan province.
Some people belonging to the Hindu community have also fled to India and are living in different parts of the country, particularly Indian part of Punjab demanding Indian citizenship. But those who are not able to flee are left with hardly any other option but to convert. - See more at: http://www.punjabnewsline.com/international/18-members-of-hindu-family-convert-to-islam-in-lahore/87719#sthash.il7Byuyv.dpuf
